![]() 2016 is a revolutionary era for music in many ways, and although people could have foreseen such a dramatic change on the horizon for Childish Gambino, many will embrace it and crave more. While those stuck in the past may complain about a lack of flow or edge in his new material, there are plenty other “rappers” emerging in that scene to explore to get their fix from. If there’s anything to take from this record it is that Gambino has flourished and really progressed as a musician showing real development in maturity. The bass and organ in the track flirt with each other, taking alternating steps alike a couple ballroom dancing hand in hand. James Brown-esque vocals also harrow throughout certain tracks.Ī standalone track on this album is Baby Boy. The roaring gospel choirs that have been presented so often throughout his discography (even dating back to his first release “Camp”) have stood the test of time, as has his natural ability to be innovative and adapt to the times whilst giving people what they want to hear. However, Gambino hasn’t changed completely. Dre’s Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang and guitar solos ride over thunderous big band instrumentals throughout, giving the work more a comparison to early electo-pop. ![]() However heavy synth patterns you’d hear on the likes of Dr. The record is heavily funk influenced and could be compared to late 60’s Motown in terms of genre. ![]() It’s is a sheer rain-forest of sound from start to finish and even manages to hold its own in terms of clarity. Although subjectively it could be said that it is the record’s one throwaway track. It gives an extra dimension to Gambino, showboating that he is experimenting and testing out new flavours for his work. Riot – the album’s 5th track hits like a runaway train ready to derail. The production value of this piece is mind-blowing.Įvery chapter of the record is relentlessly busy and hardly ever halts, however there is not one single instrument, shrieking backing vocal or shaker slide that is anything less than crystal and transparent throughout. Instead, he conjures raw emotion from deep inside himself, which he carefully crafts onto a magnificently produced canvas and is finally finessed via the help of Ludwig Göransson. In fact, there is not a single track on this whole record which uses rap to convey his points. Glover reflects a lot of maturity in this 11 track enterprise, straying from the typical teenage “Fuckboy” rap which seems to be omnipresent in today’s society. Solely from this 6 minute and 19 second entree, it was clear that Gambino would be taking listeners on a voyage, in an attempt to cruise them through the cosmos of his newly discovered cadence. As the track unfolded, so did a reincarnated twist on what we had seen previously from Gambino in both vocal style, as well as musical texture. Glover gave an initial taste to fans around the world on the 10th of November, when he released the record’s opening track “ Me and Your Mama” as a single on his Vevo channel. ![]() Projections for the album’s first week sales were between a staggering 85,000 and 95,000 according to Hot New Hip Hop. Last month, Glover announced its release date to be the 2nd of December, snowballing a lot of media coverage and hype along the way, as hungry fans have starved patiently for new material for 3 years. The incredibly multi-talented Donald Glover ( aka Childish Gambino) has conquered an array of media platforms over the past decade or so, including television, film and radio – his latest conquest being a fresh album “ Awaken, My Love!” released just days ago via Glassnote Records.
